Coating Overview
There are many factors to consider in selecting coatings, including coating type, coating thickness, coating color, and coating gloss. In addition, the primer and back coat requirements of the coating are considered. Currently, the ppgi coatings type includes polyester (PE), Polyvinylidene fluoride(PVDF), Silicon modified polyester (SMP), high weather resistance (HDP), acrylic coating, Polyurethane coating (PU), plastisol coating (PVC), etc.
1. PE
PE coating with excellent adhesion to the material and the ppgi galvanized steel coil is easy to be process and form. Also, polyester coatings are not suitable for UV resistance and coating film resistance, so the use of PE coatings still has some restrictions. Nevertheless, it is generally used in areas where air pollution is not severe or in products that require multiple molding processes.
2. SMP( Silicone Modified Polyester)
Since polyester contains active -OH/-COOH, it can quickly react with other polymerized compounds. It improves the sunlight resistance and powdering resistance than PE and uses Silicone resin with excellent color retention and heat resistance, The modification ratio of PE can be between 5% and 50%. SMP provides better durability than steel plates, and its anti-corrosion life can be 10-12 years. But its price is also higher than that of PE. The adhesion and processing formability is not ideal, so the SMP ppgi galvanized steel coil is unsuitable for occasions requiring multiple forming processes. Most of them are used for building roofs and external walls.
3. PVC plastisol
PVC resin with good water resistance and chemical resistance. Generally, it is coated with high solid content. The coating thickness is between 100-300um. It can provide smooth PVC coating or light embossing treatment for embossing coating. Since the PVC coating film is a plastic resin, it has a high film thickness and can provide good protection for the steel sheet. But PVC is less heat resistant. Most of them are used in Europe, but it is currently used less and less due to their relatively poor environmental protection properties.
4. PVDF
A new variety of topcoats developed in recent years, with excellent comprehensive performance and high price, is being promoted.
5. HDP
HDP polyester coating is superior to ordinary silicon-modified polyester coating, and its outdoor weather resistance reaches 15 years. The high-weather-resistant polyester resin uses monomers containing cyclohexane structure to achieve the balance of flexibility, weather resistance, and cost of the resin. Furthermore, it uses non-aromatic polyols and polyacids to reduce the absorption of UV light by the resin, to achieve high weather resistance of the coating. In addition, UV absorbers and hindered amines (HALS) are added to the paint formulation to improve the weather resistance of the paint film. As a result, high-weather polyester coil coatings have been recognized by the market abroad, and the cost-effectiveness of the coatings is very outstanding.

Primer selection
For primer selection, there are two most important factors, one is to consider the adhesion of primer and topcoat and the substrate, and the primer provides most of the corrosion resistance of the coating. For this, epoxy resin is the obvious choice. However, if you consider flexibility and UV resistance, you can choose a polyurethane primer.
For the back coating, the correct choice is to choose a two-layer structure if the color-coated steel plate is used as a veneer, a layer of back primer, and a layer of back finish. The primer is the same variety as the front, and the topcoat is a polyester of a light color (such as white). On the other hand, if the color-coated steel sheet is used as a composite or sandwich panel, it is enough to coat the back with a layer of epoxy resin with excellent adhesion and corrosion resistance.
